New age real beetles equipped with backups set to boost disaster management efforts

Scientists were looking for new way to boost the disaster management efforts on the global scale by bringing the world’s first smallest disaster management squad. The look of the beetles is very much similar to wearing backpack but it does have a number of unique features. These beetles have the ability to detect the carbon dioxide within the collapsed building and they controlled remotely using the tiny packs fitted right on their back. The carbon dioxide being released by the people trapped inside the buildings and other places will help in getting them detected by these beetles and rescue efforts will be centered round getting them safely and soundly fast.

Scientists are immensely hopeful that these beetles will be sent in areas which have suffered from earthquakes, hurricanes and other disaster to boost the rescue efforts. The detectors placed on the beetles will help the people controlling the beetles to locate the life in the rubble. These beetles will be able to find whoever or whatever is generating carbon dioxide and could help in lessening the time usually lost in finding the victims after disaster events. Secondly it will also remove the need of digging up areas in hope of finding people alive rather focusing on concentrating on such areas from where carbon dioxide is being generated and there is more likelihood of finding the trapped person or persons.

These new age cyborg beetles have been developed by a group of scientists at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The lead scientist on this research has asserted that these beetles will help in locating, finding and detecting the survivors buried below the debris and rubles quickly than any other technology present at hand. It will also help in combing a wide or large area within the shortest amount of time to get to the survivors as quickly as possible. The small size and some tool used in the development of the cyborg beetles makes them more suitable to get through the small spaces with much agility.



Scientists had made use of the darkling beetles and their backs are fitted with the tiny computer with the use of simple beeswax. The computer is used by the beetle handler to send electrical pulses to the beetle which is received by its antenna and helps in steering them on the right month. Beetles makes use of the temperature and heartbeat vibration apart from the carbon dioxide generation in order to detect survivors.

A number of critics have emerged who are actively against the use of the beetles for the rescue efforts. They believe that putting a tiny computer on the back of the beetles and steering them to detect and fin survivors is nothing less than animal torture. They are asking the scientists to make use of the mechanical robots rather than real beetles. Scientists has stated that they had taken good care of the beetles and when they are not being controlled then are living their normal lives.

Microsoft Wants to Bring HoloLens to the Consumer Market

Microsoft HoloLens was launched about two years ago but it was available only for the enterprise users or for those who can afford it for research purposes. Microsoft has been right on top of the augmented and virtual reality frenzy since the time of its inception as it wanted to position as the Next Big Thing in the consumer electronic market. Microsoft released the HoloLens among much fanfare and critical acclaim years ago but it was available only for the developers and enterprises with limited numbers, application support coupled with a massive $3000 price tag.

The history of HoloLens

When Microsoft first launched the HoloLens in 2015 it was positioned more as a set of software applications, AI as well as operating system rather than just being a headset. This has helped Microsoft rising above the competition of slew of headsets which emerged in later years which focused on the battery life, user experience and application support. A number virtual reality focused gadgets came up offering different and interactive game or application but they didn’t even tried to change the computer-user interaction paradigm.

On other hand Microsoft focused on augmented reality or mixed reality which allows users to experience as they wish. This has resulted in close synchronization between the data gathered from multiple sources, analyzing of the behavior pattern and having a operating system in place which actively binds them together. These maps can in turn be used by the robots for efficient navigation and in the final it will enable robots in understanding the needs of the humans by carefully translating their gestures into meaningful tasks. Microsoft even brought a smarter and updated version of Kinect called Kinect 2.0 which appeared to be extremely cool but failed to fathom anyone’s interest.

In just past two years a number of environments and cases have emerged for the HoloLens to take advantage. But Microsoft has been right in focusing only on the enterprise during the initial years as it will be dangerous to bring such a technology right to the wide amount of consumers. A simple case study of the wearable that make use of the VR and AR has simply failed to show huge sales figure as consumers doesn’t find much benefit coming to them at the end. Therefore Microsoft is spending its time bringing a wide range of apps and environments which will help consumers in testing out the full capabilities of the technology in a smart way rather than being restricted to few things which can be done which such a capable device.

A New Quantum Particle Calculation Making Waves in Scientific Field

Researcher had successfully developed a new and more advanced way of measuring the wave functions, which describe the strange behaviour of subatomic particles. With this breakthrough development the quantum computing, secure wireless communications and quantum teleportation would come closer to reality than it was ever before.

There is a small realm of scientific field, whichis known as quantum mechanics. It states that the particles can exist in multiple places at once through an unusual phenomenon called superposition. And in order to describe the huge number of positions and velocities which a particle can have at any given moment is measured through the use of wave functions.

Both the quantum computing and teleportation relies on particles, which can exist in multiple places at once.

A lead researcher on this finding also stated that the huge multidimensional systems have complicated wave functions, which cannot be measured earlier due to inefficient traditional methods. But with the new method it is highly possible to calculate wave functions more accurately and faster and it will be beneficial for scientists in developing quantum technology for new generation.

How the Wave Functions are Calculated?

Earlier the wave function of a quantum system was calculated by taking a huge number of measurements and then estimating a function or an equation, which was best, suited for all the measurements. This old technique was called ‘direct measurement’, which used to measure the wave function by weakly measuring position and strongly measuring the momentum. This technique was suited only for the small systems with few dimensions but as with the advancement, the system grew bigger and bigger it became more and more difficult to accurately measure the wave functions.

Therefore, this new technique is developed called ‘compressed direct measurement’, which uses a series of random measurements of the position and momentum of the particles in their quantum state. Then an algorithm is assigned which finds the wave function, which is best, suited for a number of measurements. This new technique is about 350 times faster and just requires 20 percent of the measurements than the old one.

The Era of Quantum Tech

Researchers have asserted that the new direct measurement technique can mould the way of success for quantum computing. The regular computers handle ‘bits’ of information while a quantum computer could ‘qubits’ of information, which could be represented by either zero or one at the same time. Compressed direct measurement can help in reaching terahertz speed, which will give incredible speed in transferring data in the form T-rays. These waves have the ability to pass through most materials like paper, clothing etc. However, it should also be noted that these waves are difficult to detect and manipulate, therefore scientists would find difficulty in harnessing them into digital media. Furthermore, quantum is still a new idea in technology as well as an emerging field it will take time before becoming reality.
